Tim OBrien A Co contendd In an attempt to unloose near shame and guilt about his involvement in the war OBrien writes a paper about himself that he has neer before t rare any wizard, titled The Rainy River. The story starts t onlyy at the summer of 1968 when he was 21 forms old and was engageed to come in the army. Before he was drafted, OBrien had taken a stand against the war by doing things such as run for the presidential campaign of anti-war advocate Eugene McCarthy and writing college report editorials against the war. OBrien recounts his thoughts on receiving a draft notice, whimsey that he was not good for war and should not have to be waste ones time down of his educational accomplishments. OBrien in the story tries to leave for Canada but is shame and solicitude of what people efficiency think of him brings him back and into the Vietnam War. Which raises the question was OBrien a coward or did he have courage? OBrien starts the story pip with This is one story Ive never told before. non to anyone. not to my parents, not to my brother or sister, not even to my wife. To go into it, Ive always thought, would only cause embarrassment for all of us, a sudden need to be elsewhere, which is the natural chemical reaction to a confession. This statement gives off a cowardly feeling setting the story in motion. A 21 year old OBrien had what seemed a hook going for him. He graduated from college had a summer work and in comes a letter saying he was straight off drafted into the war. Not knowing what to do he basically tries to extend his draft letter and when his dad asks him whats his plans for the summer he says Nothing, have a bun in the oven. He starts to think about running for Canada and whence one day at work while doing his mutual wrinkle of removing blood clots from the neck of dead pigs something inside him broke.
